The Cold War and recent political upheaval in Europe will be the focus of a two-day gathering of political commentators and students beginning Friday at Occidental College.
Titled “Is the Cold War Over?: The International System into the Nineties,” the first Occidental Public Affairs Conference will feature a series of workshops and panel discussions.
Among the speakers will be Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-Colorado); William Maynes, editor of Foreign Policy magazine; Washington Post journalist Jay Matthews; Sergei Plekhanov, deputy director of the Institute of U.S. and Canadian Studies of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences, Moscow; and Robert Kuttner, author of “The Economic Illusion” and a contributing editor of the New Republic.
Funded by the Ford Foundation, the conference was conceived and organized by two senior public policy majors at the college. The planners hope it will become an annual event, spurring greater student involvement in current issues.
