World IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Disaster Declared; U.S. Increases Aid

The United States has declared Lebanon a disaster area after fighting that has claimed more than 500 lives. The U.S. State Department said $250,000 in emergency medical aid will be sent. Spokesman Richard Boucher said the disaster declaration follows two weeks of fierce fighting in Christian East Beirut. The emergency aid is in addition to the regular U.S. humanitarian program for Lebanon, which amounts to $23 million for fiscal 1990, he said.
