From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports
Photography giant Canon Inc. has set up a subsidiary in China, making it the first major Japanese firm to start a big project there since the military crackdown in June.
The new wholly owned subsidiary is in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, adjacent to the Portuguese-ruled territory of Macao.
The plant will assemble 1,250 compact cameras a month beginning in October, raising output to 30,000 a month by 1992. All the cameras will be exported, a Canon spokesman said.
Initially most parts for the camera will be shipped from Japan, but some eventually will be produced by the subsidiary.
