Cardinal Bernard F. Law, departing Sunday for a three-day visit to Cuba, said he consulted with President Bush about recent hints at reform dropped by Cuba’s Communist Party.

“The President is very interested in what my impressions will be of this trip,” said Law, who spoke with Bush on Saturday. The Roman Catholic prelate has formed a strong friendship with the President in recent years.

Law said the trip’s main purpose was to strengthen ties between the Catholic Church in the United States and in Cuba.
