NATION IN BRIEF : MASSACHUSETTS : Sheriff Remains in ‘Captured’ Armory
A judge ordered the state not to evict a sheriff from the National Guard armory in Springfield, Mass., that he commandeered to house 15 prisoners from his overflowing county jail. Judge John Moriarty set a hearing for today on arguments. Citing “a threat to public safety,” Sheriff Michael Ashe commandeered the armory Friday with 30 armed jail guards. He declared the site an annex for his packed 102-year-old county jail. National Guard officials have termed the action “criminal trespass” and demanded that Ashe leave. Ashe chose the armory because of its showers, toilets, kitchen and athletic equipment.
