Ceradyne Inc.: The Costa Mesa-based technical ceramic company incurred a loss of $2.6 million for 1989, compared to a loss of $6 million in 1988. Sales dropped 10%, to $23.1 million from $25.6 million. For the fourth quarter, the company reported a profit of $451,000, resulting from a gain of $1.3 million from the sale of a subsidiary and a reduced loss from continuing operations. The 1988 fourth-quarter loss of $3.4 million included asset writedowns relating to the reduced level of defense-linked business and the establishment of reserves for product and facility consolidations.
