The editors of the Journal of the American Medical Assn. today said they are moving up publication of the weekly magazine by two days, in part to beat rival publications into print with news items.

Under the change, the Journal will be issued Wednesday, one day earlier than the rival New England Journal of Medicine, its prime competitor in the United States.

Without mentioning the New England Journal by name, JAMA editor George Lundberg said he wants to be “poised to be able to publish new research findings before other medical and scientific journals that may be coincidentally ready to publish related material.”

When the change occurs in April, it will be the third time the Journal has switched its publication date in its 107-year history.
