Noisy Motorist Charged With 730 Misdemeanors

A motorist has been slapped with 730 misdemeanor counts for allegedly disturbing the peace by roaring past the homes of his Torrance neighbors every day for a year in his souped-up Volkswagen, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Neighbors complained that Jonathan Allabaugh, 21, also steered his car at them, cursed them, and even threatened to kill one resident who told him to slow down.

“It just seems like he was trying to terrorize his little corner of the Earth,” said city prosecutor J.D. Lord, who charged Allabaugh with 365 counts of disturbing the peace and 365 counts of driving on a suspended license. Allabaugh allegedly disturbed his neighbors in the Hollywood Riviera section of Torrance every day from Aug. 9, 1988, until Aug. 8, 1989.

If convicted, Allabaugh theoretically could be sentenced to more than 273 years in jail and fined thousands of dollars. He remains free on $25,000 bail and faces a Feb. 27 pretrial hearing.
