From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

An estimated 8,000 gallons of a weak mixture of ammonia and water leaked from an Arco plant and flowed on streets through a Newhall neighborhood before being capped this morning; no residents were evacuated and no one was injured, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The leak from the Arco steam and electrical cogeneration plant near the 20800 block of Placerita Canyon Road was reported at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Fire Capt. Lynn Mohr said.

The liquid, estimated to be more than 96% water, leaked from water lines and from an ammonia holding tank and flowed down a canyon and along nearby Oak Orchard Road and Oak Creek Avenue, Mohr said. The solution emptied into the dry bed of Placerita Creek. The leak was capped by Arco employees about 1 a.m. today, Mohr said.
