From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

A fire that swept through a Canyon Country mobile home and killed a 54-year-old woman was started accidentally, apparently when the woman fell asleep while smoking, authorities said this morning.

The woman had not been positively identified this morning, officials said. The fire was reported at 10 p.m. Tuesday by other residents in the Cordova Mobile Estates at 27361 Sierra Highway, Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Bob Dobes said.

Dobes said the victim had been in a rear bedroom of the double-wide trailer by herself. A man believed to be her husband, whose name was also withheld, arrived home and found the trailer on fire but was unable to save her because of the flames, Dobes said.

The fire caused several small explosions within the mobile home, Dobes said. Firefighters put the blaze out in about 15 minutes.
