WORLD : Population of Tokyo Declines
From Times Wire Services
TOKYO —
The population of Tokyo fell to an estimated 11.9 million as of Jan. 1, down 0.11% from a year ago, its first decline in nine years, the metropolitan government said today.
The population included 211,067 non-Japanese, among them 90,216 South Koreans, 61,860 Chinese, 15,059 Americans and 10,898 Filipinos.
A city official attributed the decline to a low birthrate and to people moving out of Tokyo because of the high cost of land and housing.
