Schmidinger, Kitt Win First Skiing Titles

A.J. Kitt and Krista Schmidinger won super giant slalom titles Tuesday at the U.S. Alpine Ski Championships.

Kitt, 21, of Rochester, N.Y., used a controlled, nearly flawless run to win the men’s event. Schmidinger, 19, of Lee, Mass., had a wild ride, nearly losing control several times.

It was the first national title for both skiers.

Kitt, a downhill specialist, had a time of 1 minute 29.83 seconds to overtake Todd Kelly of Squaw Valley, Calif., who finished second in 1:30.07. Kyle Wieche of Farmington, Conn., was third in 1:30.25.

In the women’s super-G, Schmidinger posted a time of 1:36.80, bettering the time of 1:36.99 by U.S. Ski Team veteran Diann Roffe of Williston, Vt. Kristi Terzian of Salt Lake City was third in 1:37.06.
