John Haskell Kemble; Maritime Historian

John Haskell Kemble, 77, a nationally known maritime historian and retired professor of history and former chairman of the history department at Pomona College. Kemble, who received his doctoral degree from UC Berkeley in 1937, was author of several articles on maritime history and two books: “The Panama Route, 1848-1869” and “San Francisco Bay: A Pictorial Maritime History.” He also edited other books on voyages of old and was a former president of the Historical Society of Southern California. On Monday of a heart attack while en route to Sydney, Australia, on a worldwide cruise.
