WORLD IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Two Arabs Killed by U.N. Soldiers
Irish soldiers serving with the U.N peacekeeping forces killed two Arab militiamen in southern Lebanon, the United Nations said. A statement from UNIFIL, the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon, said troops of the Amal militia shot at three Irish soldiers in the village of Hadathah, seriously injuring one of them, before the U.N. troops returned fire. Earlier, Lebanon’s rival Shiite Muslim militias fought with mortars and machine guns. Reports said troops of the pro-Syrian Amal and of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah (Party of God) battled 25 miles south of Beirut.
