A plea agreement is in the works for indicted former Yolo County Sheriff Rod Graham, according E. Richard Walker, his lawyer.

The attorney said Wednesday that he expects Graham to plead guilty to a federal conspiracy charge stemming from an FBI’s undercover investigation.

Graham, 48, resigned as sheriff last October, months after a federal grand jury had indicted him on charges of extorting a $3,650 payment for his 1986 reelection campaign.

Under the proposed agreement, Walker said, federal prosecutors will recommend that Graham serve no more than a year in prison.

Assistant U.S. Atty. John P. Panneton declined to comment on specifics of any possible agreement, but he confirmed that he expects Graham to plead guilty when he appears in federal court on Feb. 28.
