Televised Surgery: Viewers in 12 cities watched as doctors reconstructed a 15-month-old girl’s skull on live television. Surgeons successfully reshaped the infant’s skull Tuesday night to correct a rare disorder, plagiocephaly, which causes the seams in the skull to close prematurely. The result is facial deformity and the threat of serious vision problems. The operation was televised live by WHYY-Philadelphia and carried by 11 other PBS stations, mainly in the Northeast. Although the program will air in other parts of the state, there are no plans to broadcast the operation in Southern California.
