NFL quarterback Ron Jaworski announced today that he had decided not to run for a U.S. congressional seat from New Jersey.

“At this point in my life, I cannot make the total commitment to political office that is necessary and that the people deserve,” said Jaworski, who started his career with the Los Angeles Rams and played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1977 to 1986.

Jaworski, a backup for the Kansas City Chiefs last season, considered running for the seat vacated by Gov. James J. Florio after being approached by Republican leaders.
