Uwe-Jens Mey and Angela Hauch, both of East Germany, won the men’s and women’s 500-meter races in the World Championship Speed Skating at Tromsoe, Norway.

Mey’s time was 37.16. Second was defending champion Igor Zhelekowsky of the Soviet Union.

Hauch won in 41.32, with Bonnie Blair second at 41.65.

Blair finished fourth in the women’s 1,000.

Zhelekowsky won the men’s 1,000 in 1:16.84.

Dan Jansen was fourth in the 1,000 and sixth in the 500.
