P.M. BRIEFING : Connecticut Leads in Income

Connecticut led the nation in per capita income in 1987 at $16,094, followed by New Jersey and the District of Columbia, while Mississippi finished last at $8,088, the Census Bureau said today.

Per capita income was $15,028 in New Jersey and $14,778 in the nation’s capital, the report said. California ranked ninth at $13,197.

The 1987 figures represent the Census Bureau’s latest estimates.

Among the nation’s 3,139 counties and independent cities, the Washington suburb of Falls Church, Va., ranked No. 1 with a per capita income of $23,169, followed by nearby Alexandria, Va., at $22,200 and neighboring Arlington County, Va., at $22,181.

Marin County, Calif., ranked No. 4 at $21,611, followed by Montgomery County, Md., another Washington suburb, at $21,576.

Owsley County, Ky., meanwhile, was at the bottom of the counties list at $4,747, the Census Bureau said.
