THE LOS ANGELES MARATHON V

A number of events that are open to the public will precede Sunday’s 26.2-mile run through the streets of Los Angeles:

Feb. 28--March 3

Los Angeles Marathon Health and Fitness Exposition--A free expo featuring more than 175 exhibitors promoting goods and services relating to a healthy life style. The Los Angeles Airport Hilton & Towers, 5711 W. Century Blvd., noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

March 3

Vons Carbo-Load Dinner--Shrine Exposition Hall, 665 West Jefferson Blvd., 5 to 9 p.m. Cost of pasta, entertainment and dancing is $10.

Great Earth Benefit Performance--A ‘50s revival show with Bo Diddley, the Drifters, the Marvelettes, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas to benefit the 26 official charities of the marathon; Shrine Auditorium, 8 p.m. Tickets are $22.50, but discount coupons are available at Great Earth vitamin retailers and at Northridge Fashion Center.

March 4

Race-Walking Division--Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard, adjacent to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, 8:05 a.m. Entry is $25 per person and deadline for registering is March 3.

Wheelchair Marathon--Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard, 8:15 a.m. Entry, $25 per person; deadline, March 3.

City of Los Angeles Marathon V--Figueroa Street and Exposition Boulevard, 8:35 a.m. Entry, $25 per person; deadline, March 3.

5K Marathon--33rd and Figueroa streets, 9 a.m. Cost is $15 per person.

Finish Line Festival--In front of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and features entertainment from KIIS-FM and KVEA-TV (Channel 52), giveaways, food and displays from approximately 50 companies.

Marathon Awards Gala and Dance--International Ballroom of the Los Angeles Hilton & Towers, 7 p.m. Open to all marathoners, volunteers and their guests; awards to top finishers in all divisions; a disco party follows.
