Lobbyist Pleads Not Guilty Over Painting of House
A lobbyist accused of illegally arranging to have Assemblyman Dominic L. Cortese’s house painted pleaded not guilty Tuesday.
Carl Burg, 65, of Sacramento is charged with a misdemeanor violation of the Political Reform Act, which prohibits lobbyists from making a gift or arranging for another person to make a gift worth more than $10 to a legislator. The maximum penalty is six months in jail and a $10,000 fine.
Burg works for the Painting & Decorating Contractors of California. A member of the trade group painted a guest house on Cortese’s San Jose property in 1987, two days after the Assembly passed a bill that Cortese carried that would make it easier for subcontractors such as painters to get paid by general contractors.
