Outdoors : Largemouth, Stripers Biting at Silverwood

Silverwood Lake is usually good for one or the other, but fishermen are catching both striped and largemouth bass at the San Bernardino County reservoir.

Greg Silks of Alta Loma fished the channel and caught stripers weighing 25 and 20 pounds.

Ralph Sierra of Fontana caught four largemouth totaling 13 pounds.

LAKE MEAD--Some striped bass biting in Vegas Wash. Stripers to 30 pounds reportedly very active below Hoover Dam at Aztec Wash.

BULLHEAD CITY--Trout active on river, averaging 1 1/2 to two pounds, biting best on Power Bait. Striped bass slow.

SALTON SEA--Orangemouth corvina best at Red Hill, Niland Marina and State Park jetty, most weighing about five pounds. Croaker active at Bombay Beach. Tilapia best in freshwater streams that lead into sea. Sargo slow.

LAKE CACHUMA--Two trout plants expected this week. Trollers doing best using three-five colors and needlefish lure along north cliffs off Johnson Bay. Shore fishermen reporting fair results off launching ramp peninsula (fishing pier installed there Tuesday). Largemouth bass slow, best along rocky shoreline.

LAKE CASITAS--Trout planted Tuesday, fish biting in marina and dam on trout-colored needlefish. Largemouth bass becoming active at Wadleigh Arm, Station Canyon and Deer Slope. Andy Wahrenbrock, La Crescenta, 9 3/4-pound bass. Catfish slow.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish providing most action, biting in marina and channel on anchovies. Bob Hanley, Westchester, 10 1/2-pound catfish. Tony Simril, Gorman, 9 1/2- and 4 1/2-pound catfish. Striped bass showing occasionally in marina. Hanley, 12-pound striper. Largemouth bass active in Bear Trap and Brazo’s coves. Rey Caunca, Sepulveda, 3 1/2-pound largemouth. Pete Kiefer, Castaic, three largemouth, largest eight pounds. Scott Kingsland, Frazier Park, 3 1/2-pound catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass picking up, biting best near island on jigs and plastic worms. Trout rated good at dam and San Felicia Cove--1,800 planted Tuesday. Power Bait and Velveeta Cheese best. Jim Costa, Van Nuys, three trout, six pounds. Catfish best at dam on mackerel. Gary Olson, Ventura, 14 1/2-pound catfish.

LAKE CASTAIC--Largemouth bass fair in both lakes. Bigger fish biting on live crawfish and mudsuckers. Catfish slow.

PUDDINGSTONE RESERVOIR--Trout biting throughout lake on Berkley Power Bait and nightcrawlers. Tagged fish worth $10 and $50 still available from recent tournament, according to spokesman. Alvin Mirabal, Eagle Rock, 3 1/2-pound trout, caught on crawfish. Don Carter, Pomona, four-pound trout. Joseph Szezesiul, La Habra, 4 1/2-pound trout. Largemouth bass biting at 20 feet, best at cliffs and clam beds. Ken Mathews, 10 bass to three pounds. Water 54 degrees.

PERRIS LAKE--Largemouth and spotted bass expected to improve as water temperature rises. Still 51 degrees and fish at 20-45 feet. Best bet: Plastic grubs at east end, launch ramp or dam. Trout fair, best after plant. Other species slow.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Largemouth and striped bass active in several areas. Greg Silks, Alta Loma, 25- and 20-pound stripers, both caught in channel. Colleen and Steve Mahoney, 22- and 18-pound stripers, respectively. Alan Cole, Lancaster, 19-pound striper, caught at dam. Frank Moon, Apple Valley, four largemouth, 10 pounds. Ralph Sierra, Fontana, four largemouth, 13 pounds, caught in channel. Trout stocked Tuesday, best through Miller Canyon, in channel and in front of marina.
