Suspect Being Sought in Nighttime Bank Heist

FBI and local authorities have identified a suspect in their investigation of the first nighttime bank heist in Arcadia in 16 years.

The theft of $180,000 from the Columbia National Bank branch on South 1st Avenue was discovered Tuesday morning by employees coming to work. Investigators would not release the suspect’s identity but they said they did not believe a bank employee was involved.

However, Detective Edward Winter did say that “the suspect possibly had prior knowledge of the layout of the location and knew the operation.”

Entry was not forced, and the safe’s alarm system was not set off, said Arcadia Police Lt. Don Glenn. But inside, the door to the vault was broken. Not all the money in the safe, which is opened by a combination and key, was taken.

“We don’t know if he picked the locks or had a key” to the safe, Winter said.
