Brazil Names Woman New Economy Minister: Fernando Collor de Mello, Brazil’s president-elect named Zelia Cardoso de Mello, a 36-year-old economist, as his economy minister. Cardoso is the first woman to be appointed to an important cabinet post in Brazilian history. Collor de Mello, 40, will take office as president March 15, and Cardoso--no relation to the president--will help him execute plans to combat inflation, now running at more than 70% per month.
