‘Heartfelt Acting Deserves Some Heartfelt Applause’ Is Applauded

I could not agree more with the letter (“Heartfelt Acting Deserves Some Heartfelt Applause”) which appeared in the Feb. 24 Orange County Calendar.

As a season ticket-holder at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, I am thoroughly embarrassed and disgusted that after each performance, the audience feebly applauds the actors and actresses who have given us their hearts and souls for the entire evening.

Oftentimes, the audience doesn’t even wait for the applause to subside before hurriedly departing in order to ensure a timely exit from the busy parking structure. There have been several occasions where I have wanted to actually shout at the people who rudely exit before giving these hard-working actors and actresses the applause they deserve.

Orange County theatergoers need to wake up and realize that these talented actors and actresses may wake up one day sick and tired of the lackluster and unemotional gratification they receive from the audience, and they may decide to boycott Orange County altogether. What a sad day that would be!

I am as guilty as the rest, for at the end of the performance, when everyone lightly claps his or her hands together, I go right along clapping and wait tentatively for someone, anyone, to make the first move.

Next time, it’s going to be me that jumps up and starts the standing ovation.
