Officers Accused of Kidnaping Plead Not Guilty

Two San Diego police officers pleaded not guilty Friday to kidnaping and robbing illegal migrants while on duty.

Richard Schaaf, 29, and Lloyd Hoff, 27, face life terms in state prison if convicted.

The pair were charged Jan. 25 with kidnaping for robbery, simple kidnaping and robbery of three illegal migrants in two incidents in downtown San Diego.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Jesus Rodriguez set an April 16 trial date for the officers, who are suspended with pay from the force.

Schaaf’s attorney, Everett Bobbitt, said the alleged victims have criminal histories and do not like police officers.

Two migrant workers have testified that Hoff and Schaaf last year picked them up in their patrol car and robbed them of $125.

The third victim has since disappeared, and attorneys have been unable to locate him.

Each officer remains free on $35,000 bail posted several days after their arrests.
