Alban Damage Suit Against Ackerman Settled Out of Court for Untold Sum

A lawsuit seeking an unspecified amount in damages from Bradley Ackerman for the 1988 shooting of his then-girlfriend, Julie Alban, has been settled out of court.

“The settlement is satisfactory,” said George Wise, an attorney representing Alban, 24, who was left paralyzed by the incident. Wise said he and all other parties to the settlement are under a court order not to reveal its terms.

Ackerman, the 25-year-old stepson of Daniel H. Ridder, chairman emeritus of the Long Beach Press-Telegram, was convicted of first-degree attempted murder on Dec. 20, 1988, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

During the trial he maintained that he had blacked out on Valium and did not remember the shooting. Alban testified that the two had argued about their relationship the night before and that Ackerman had shot her early in the morning while she slept in her room at the El Dorado Park Estates home of her parents, where Ackerman was a guest.
