Kindergartners Said to Get Drug Education
A majority of elementary schools begin drug education in kindergarten, and most also have programs to discuss AIDS and sex education, a survey showed Sunday.
The National Assn. of Elementary School Principals poll of 556 educators found drug education existed in 95% of the schools, compared to 88% in a 1987 survey.
Fifty-eight percent of schools began drug education in kindergarten, 30% by third grade and 12% between fourth and sixth grade, the survey said.
Ninety-six percent of the principals agreed that AIDS education should be part of the elementary school curriculum, but only 63% said they had an AIDS program.
