NEC to Increase Use of Foreign-Made Chips: Japan’s leading computer maker said it will raise its use of foreign-made chips in its machines to 24%, up from 20%, by July, 1991, when a U.S.-Japan semiconductor agreement expires. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry was reported to have made the request out of concern that the United States might take retaliatory trade action unless U.S.-made semiconductors account for 20% of the Japanese market by the time the accord expires.
