Foreign Firms Get More of Japan Chip Market: Increased cooperation between Japanese and U.S. firms helped foreign companies boost their share of Japan’s semiconductor market to a record 12.9% in the fourth quarter of 1989, 0.9 percentage points above the previous quarter and 2.3 points higher than the year-ago quarter, a Ministry of Trade and Industry official said. However, the MITI official declined to predict whether foreign firms would achieve by 1991 the 20% share they had targeted after signing the Japan-U.S. semiconductor pact in 1986.
