Hubert Mills Dies at 102

Hubert (Scubie) Mills, a La Verne citrus rancher, postal worker, volunteer firefighter and 1973 Citizen of the Year, died in his sleep March 1. He was 102.
Mills was 18 when he arrived in La Verne, then known as Lordsburg, from Tennessee. He was a citrus rancher and delivered mail for the U.S. Postal Service using a horse-drawn cart. He retired from the Postal Service in 1965.
Mills was a volunteer with the La Verne Fire Department for 72 years. A park under construction on Wheeler Avenue will be named for him.
Mills is survived by a sister, Lonnie McCall of Redlands. Funeral services were held Tuesday.
