Ending several months of negotiations, the City Council approved a four-year contract with the city’s police union this week.

The council voted 4 to 1 to approve the contract, with Councilman Thomas Lorch voting against the pact.

“We’re very excited that we finally reached an agreement,” said Councilwoman Holly Veale. “I’m glad to have it behind us.”

Contract talks between city and police negotiators had stalled several times before both sides returned to the bargaining table last month.

The San Clemente Peace Officers Assn. has been working without a contract since December.

The new contract calls for an immediate 4.5% raise. Retroactive pay for the period between Jan. 1 and March 5 will be paid in a lump sum. Salaries will be raised an additional 3% on July 1 and by 2% on Jan. 1, 1991.

Also included in the contract is extra money for bilingual field officers and an extra week of vacation for officers with at least 15 years’ experience.
