Two men who stuffed a woman into a North Hollywood trash dumpster during a kidnaping and apparent robbery attempt ran off when an Internal Revenue Service agent heard her screams and shot at them, Los Angeles police said today.

The woman, a 44-year-old Van Nuys resident whose name was not released, was bruised and frightened but otherwise uninjured after the 8:15 p.m. incident Thursday, Police Lt. Ron La Rue said. The two suspects escaped.

John Everett, an agent with the IRS criminal investigation division in Los Angeles, was conducting surveillance work in the vicinity of Hesby Drive and Lankershim Boulevard when he heard screams coming from the parking lot of the Security Pacific bank at the corner. Everett ran to the parking lot and saw that two men had put a woman into a trash dumpster and were closing the lid on her, La Rue said.

The IRS agent identified himself and fired his handgun at the two men. They jumped into a nearby car and fled.
