NATION IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Subway Crash Driver Tied to Cocaine Use
The driver of a Philadelphia subway train that derailed in a rush-hour crash, killing three people and injuring 163, has tested positive for cocaine use, federal investigators said. Investigators also said they found cases of improper maintenance of Philadelphia city trains, and the municipal transit authority began pulling 240 subway cars out of service for inspection. National Transportation Safety Board investigator John Lauber said urine and blood tests of Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority personnel aboard the train that crashed Wednesday showed the driver had been using cocaine. But Transit Authority General Manager Louis Gambaccini and Lauber both refused to link cocaine use to the accident. Gambaccini said the driver, who has not been identified, has been suspended without pay.
