GO JANET: The third time may be a charm for Olympic gold medal swimmer Janet Evans (above, during 1988 Olympics) of Placentia. . . . She’s a leading contender for the James E. Sullivan Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the year’s outstanding amateur athlete. The Stanford freshman, who will be in Indianapolis for the awards dinner tonight, lost out in 1988 to college baseball star Jim Abbott, now of the Angels, and last year to Olympic sprinter Florence Griffith Joyner. . . . Those who see Evans as an eventual Sullivan winner point to Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis. The former Mission Viejo diver was a five-time finalist before winning the 1984 trophy.
