THE SIDELINES : $382 Million for Spain Security

Spain plans to spend $382 million to police the Barcelona Summer Olympics and Seville’s Expo ‘92, a top official said today.

Rafael Vera, the state secretary for security, told reporters that the national police force is having trouble finding lodging for the 10,000 officers going to Barcelona to provide security during the Olympics.

Most of the security budget for the 1992 events, $309 million, was earmarked for equipment, he said.

The Summer Olympic Games open July 25, 1992, and run for two weeks.

Expo ’92 will to open April 12 and end Oct. 12, 1992--500 years to the day after Christopher Columbus reached San Salvador Island in the Caribbean at the end of his first transatlantic voyage.
