P.M. BRIEFING : Strike Dries Up Italian Gasoline
- Share via
ROME — Gasoline pumps ran dry in Rome and most southern Italian cities today as striking truckers set up blockades in front of supply centers at major oil companies.
Nearly half of Italy’s 200,000 truckers went on strike Monday to protest a proposed law they contend denies trucking businesses sufficient tax breaks. The strike is scheduled to last until Monday.
The strikers began pressing their demands Tuesday by using trucks to block deliveries of gasoline to stations by non-striking truckers.
Worried drivers lined up in front of the rapidly decreasing number of operating pumps as word of the fuel shortage spread.
