James L. Pate, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Houston-based oil company Pennzoil Co., has been named president and chief executive.
Pate, 54, replaces Randal B. McDonald, 59, who is retiring after 38 years in the business, including 35 at Pennzoil.
Pate, a 14-year veteran of Pennzoil, is also a former U.S. assistant secretary of commerce and a one-time White House aide. In his new position, he will be responsible for all operating divisions and corporate functions of the company and its affiliates.
J. Hugh Liedtke remains Pennzoil’s chairman.
