Malibu : Canyon Proposal Rejected

Share

A real estate developer’s plans to build 25 homes above Malibu’s Trancas Canyon has been rejected by the state Coastal Commission.

By an 8-4 vote, the state panel this week denied a plan by Javid Development Co. to build the houses on 45 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Neighbors had complained that the hillside project was too large and would mar the view of the canyon and ocean, as well as pose drainage problems for residents whose homes are below the proposed development.

The Coastal Commission staff had recommended approving the project after Javid offered to reduce the amount of grading by almost two-thirds, to 127,000 cubic feet. In addition to the houses, the proposal included the building of streets and storm drains, and installing septic tanks.

Commissioner Madelyn Glickfeld, who lives in Malibu, was among the panel members opposed to the proposal who said that they were concerned with the project’s size.
