POP MUSIC REVIEW : Tammy Tells It True

Share

Though Tammy Wynette’s songs served as much of the score of the film “Five Easy Pieces,” they’d make an even better score for, say, a feature-length documentary version of “Beyond Co-Dependency.” What other woman would dare sing the lines “Til I get used to losin’ you, let me keep on usin’ you”?

But, making a rare club appearance at the Roxy on Wednesday, the brassy heartbreak queen blended in plenty of songs of bold defiance as well as slavish attachment, getting full mileage out of both the victim thang and the triumph thang.

Wynette was absolutely in top form in spirit and voice as well as physique, giving even quarter-century-old warhorses the same convincing gusto that she gave the small scattering of new tunes.
