VENTURA : Fees Considered for Beach Parking Lot

Share

The Ventura County Fair Board is considering charging a fee for parking in a lot the fair owns near a popular Ventura surfing spot, a fair official said Wednesday.

The fair’s security and parking committee will hold a public hearing April 4 to take public comment on how to maintain the 328-space parking lot near Surfers’ Point, said Art Amelio, fairgrounds assistant manager.

The fair currently allows use of the parking lot at no charge, but its board of directors is considering charging fees to maintain the parking lot in good condition. The parking lot opened six months ago.

“Right now the lot is brand new, but we are concerned with upkeep and maintenance, and we’re beginning to see some acts of vandalism,” Amelio said.

On Tuesday at a public hearing before the committee, several surfers said they opposed daily parking fees. Some proposed low-cost 12-month parking permits as a way to raise revenue, Amelio said.

The Ventura County Fair Board will meet March 20 to prepare a recommendation on how much, if anything, the fees might be and how they would be collected. The April 4 hearing will be held at the fairgrounds Mineral and Gem building.
