From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Gunmen in police uniform burst into Lebanon’s Central Bank in Muslim West Beirut and tried to abduct the bank governor, Edmond Naim, 72, but were driven off by guards who opened fire. “They manhandled him, punched him in the face, beat him and insulted him before the Central Bank guards opened fire and forced them to flee,” according to one senior army officer in charge of bank security. Bank and security officials said the gunmen included people assigned to protect Lebanon’s Interior Minister Elias Khazen. Naim has angered Khazen by refusing to supply funds he viewed as unnecessary.
