A San Diego police officer’s gun discharged during a struggle early Friday, but no one was injured.

The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. when a patrol car tried to stop a speeding vehicle in the 200 block of West San Ysidro Boulevard, said Dave Cohen, spokesman for the San Diego Police Department.

The car, which turned out to be stolen, stopped at Interstate 5, and its two occupants ran across the freeway and hid behind bushes as Officer Paul Wright arrived to back up the first patrol car, Cohen said.

Wright ordered the suspects out of the bushes. One man came out, but, as Wright was taking him into custody, the other man grabbed Wright’s gun. Cohen said the two men struggled for the weapon and it discharged into the dirt. The man got away, but not before Wright sprayed him in the face with chemical Mace.

Jose Carillo, 23, was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of auto theft and felony avoiding of a police officer, Cohen said.
