California IN BRIEF : REDWOOD CITY : Kidnaper Threatens to Kill Teen-Ager
The apparent kidnaper of a 16-year-old high school sophomore has threatened to kill him if a ransom demand is not paid within three days, police said Friday. Juan Ruben Chavez vanished from his home late Wednesday afternoon, leaving his favorite Raiders jacket on his bed, Redwood City police spokesman Howard Baker said. The family was not immediately worried, though, and did not notify police until after a 10 p.m. call from a Spanish-speaking stranger claiming responsibility for the abduction, Baker said. The caller told the family to “get busy and raise” the ransom money in three days. “If you don’t have the money we’ll kill him,” the caller added. Baker said the apparent kidnaper has not called back since Wednesday.
