Share

A town-hall meeting is planned for Thursday to discuss operations of a hiring hall for day laborers. The talk will cover who can use the hall and how it will benefit the community.

English and Spanish brochures on the center will be available at the meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. at El Modena Community Center, 18672 E. Center St.

The hiring hall, or resource center as city officials are calling it, is scheduled to open Saturday and will be open from 6 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. The trailer that will be used for the center is expected to arrive this week at the center’s site at McPherson Road and Chapman Avenue, city spokeswoman Jane Owens said.

Thirty days after the center opens, the Police Department will begin enforcing two ordinances that ban the solicitation of work on city streets. The ordinance carries maximum penalties of a $500 fine and a six-month jail sentence.
