Nation IN BRIEF : THE SOUTH : Hundreds Flee as Floods Continue
Swollen rivers and creeks in the Deep South threatened to spill out of their banks, sending hundreds more in search of higher ground. The Alabama River, bulging after torrential rains, forced 500 people to flee their homes in Montgomery and Selma. Flooding already had submerged towns and forced thousands to evacuate. In Florida, residents in 12 counties were warned to prepare for evacuation as Georgia and Alabama floodwaters flowed downstream. The Chattahoochee River north of Atlanta crested at its highest level in 44 years.
