P.M. BRIEFING : 1989 Retail Sales: $1.7 Trillion

Sales in America’s retail stores totaled $1.7 trillion in 1989, an increase of 5.1% over 1988, according to revised figures released today by the Commerce Department.

Durable goods accounted for $600 billion of the sales, an increase of 2.9% over 1988, while non-durable goods accounted for $1.1 trillion, up 6.4%, the department’s Census Bureau said in an annual report.

The revised merchandise inventories held by retailers at the end of 1989 were estimated at $236 billion.
