A man approached a Mission Beach lifeguard Monday and admitted robbing five banks in March, police said.

Bill Robinson, a San Deigo Police Department spokesman, said that Joseph Ray Wait came to the lifeguard tower in the 700 block of Ventura Place and told Frank Day that he was “tired of running” and wanted to surrender.

Police turned Wait over to FBI agents, Robinson said.

The robberies occurred between March 1 and 14 throughout San Diego County. The first took place at the Union Bank in the 8300 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard, Robinson said. The robber told the teller he had a bomb, and she gave him $789. In the most recent robbery at Coast Savings, in the 4100 block of Governor Drive, $1,700 was taken, Robinson said.

Robinson said that Wait allegedly stole more than $6,000 in the two weeks.
