Two priests have been named as the sixth and seventh auxiliary bishops of the sprawling Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Archbishop Roger Mahony announced today.

Msgr. Stephen E. Blaire, 48, the moderator of the curia and chancellor of the archdiocese, and Msgr. Sylvester D. Ryan, 59, were appointed bishops by Pope John Paul II.

Mahony said the additions reflect the Pope’s recognition of the growth of the archdiocese, which is home to about 3.5 million Catholics and sprawls over 8,762 square miles of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
