Matt Biondi, winner of five gold medals in the 1988 Olympics, won the men’s 100-yard freestyle in 42.30 seconds at the U.S. Swimming Short Course National Championships at Nashville, Tenn. Biondi’s time was the fifth fastest ever and broke his own meet record of 42.32, set in 1985.
